This is a superb original signed ink and watercolor on paper painting by well-listed early California artist REX BRANDT (American, 1914 - 2000), circa 1969.

Born in San Diego, Rex Brandt was a painter of broad, splashy, cubist watercolors and became a foremost leader of California artists who brought national attention to California artists in the 1930s and 1940s. Also as a teacher, he influenced countless numbers of students to become skilled in watercolor. Brandt grew up in San Diego and Riverside, and first attended Chouinard Art Institute at age 13.  He also studied art at Riverdale Junior College and the University of California at Berkeley where his interest in abstraction began due to the pervasive influence there of Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann. In 1937, he and Lawson Cooper organized "The California Group," a traveling watercolor exhibition that developed interest in the California style of watercolor. In 1947, he and Phil Dike opened a summer school of painting in Corona del Mar, California. He married artist Joan Irving.  

This rare unique watercolor is entitled "El Cajon & Lakeside, 1886-1908" and is signed in pencil by the artist on the front lower center "Rex Brandt". It is also inscribed on the upper left: "El Cajon & Lakeside, 1886-1908, In the 80's used for passengers + mail between Saugus + Santa Barbara, Concord Stage Coach at Serra Museum". It measures 15 ½" x 12" and is matted and framed for a total size of 18 ½" x 21 ½" (there is some wear to the frame). It is in good condition aside from toning at the mat opening and creases at the corners where it has been tipped onto a backing board. PROVENANCE: ex James S. Copley Library, La Jolla, California.
