Offered here is a charming lot of two vintage salt & pepper shaker sets from mid-20th century Japan. Both feature whimsical figural designs with hand-painted floral details, typical of the novelty kitchenware sold through American dime stores in the 1940s–1950s.
Train Set – Cast metal locomotive and coal car, enamel painted in cream with red & green accents. Both retain original cork stoppers. Displays scattered paint wear, light patina, and age-appropriate surface loss. The engine is 2 1/2” L x 1 1/2” T. The caboose is a 1 1/2” square.
Scoop Set – Chalkware/composition in the form of kitchen scoops, hand-painted with red and yellow flowers. Original cork plugs intact. One shaker shows heavier paint loss, while the other is in better condition (see photos).
Neither set is marked, but both are consistent with Japanese imports of the postwar/Occupied Japan era. These would make a wonderful addition to any salt & pepper shaker collection, train or kitchen collectible display, or mid-century décor.
