The late great "King of Rock ‘N’ Soul" Solomon Burke was an American original. His music has touched millions of faithful followers due to his angelic voice drenched in gospel, soul and rock and roll. Not only did he sell millions of records worldwide, but many superstar acts like The Rolling Stones and Tom Petty have also paid tribute to the man with their renditions of his classics over the years.
In 1966, Atlantic Records assembled one truly amazing collection of hits, which has been out of print on vinyl for over four decades entitled The Best Of Solomon Burke. Featuring twelve of his most loved Atlantic Records era recordings from 1960 to 1966, the album boasts such soul classics as Cry To Me, Everybody Needs Someone To Love, Just Out Of Reach, and Got To Get You Off My Mind.
It is with much respect and honor to announce the Friday Music release of the limited edition 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl of this incredible masterwork. Mastered from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA, The Best Of Solomon Burke is truly a classic soul masterpiece now impeccably revisited in the audiophile domain. These original sessions were produced by the legendary Jerry Wexler and Bert Berns, and engineered by Tom Dowd.
This special limited edition release includes all the original Loring Eutemey artwork restored faithfully as well as a poly sleeve to protect the cover and a poly lined LP sleeve to preserve the vinyl for years to come.

If You Need Me is an early Solomon Burke album, named after its opening cut. It contains 12 songs he recorded during the period 1959-1962. Solomon's legend was built upon this material, consisting of bluesy surroundings and country ballads. The single "If You Need Me" became a huge success, originally written and recorded by Wilson Pickett. Each song shows how he's able to reach his audience in an emotional way.

With his big, powerful voice and fervent but controlled emotionality, Solomon Burke was one of the early pioneers of soul music, though his contributions were not fully recognized until the new millennium, when he belatedly won his first Grammy.
By the age of nine, Solomon Burke (b. March 21, 1940, Philadelphia, PA) was a preacher and choir soloist at his family's Philadelphia church, the House of God for All People. At twelve he began hosting his own gospel radio show, "Solomon's Temple," and touring the gospel circuits billed as the "Wonder Boy Preacher." In 1955 he began recording both religious and secular music for Apollo and Singular before signing with Atlantic Records in 1960.
At Atlantic Burke made some of the first soul records by setting his gospel "preaching" style in song forms borrowed from R&B, rock & roll and other secular music styles. He was a major influence for Mick Jagger, who covered Burke-related songs "You Can Make It If You Try," "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," "If You Need Me" and "Cry to Me" on early Rolling Stones albums. Otis Redding also covered Burke's R&B variation on the traditional folk ballad "Down in the Valley."

This 1986 album -- on the Rounder label, which picked up other greats who were dropped by major labels -- shows one of the great soul singers of all time in prime form. From the sweetness of the opening track, "Love Buys Love" to the uptempo shouting of Burke's own "Got to Get Myself Some Money" to the wistfully hopeful (and brilliant) cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," this album is a triumph. It grows on you, and then grows some more. Soul at its best. This one is a very consistent album indeed , almost ever track is killer , indeed it may well be his best album (given that much of his best work was singles based) , it's certainly on a par with "Proud Mary" and "Don't Give Up On Me" so if you know and love either of those then I'd urge you to give this one a try , i don't think you'll be disappointed

Of all the great male '60s soul singers--a short list that includes Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and James Brown--only Solomon Burke still actively records. More amazing, he's produced his best full-length album with Don't Give Up on Me. It's easy to give some credit to the album's star songwriters, who include Burke fans Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson, and Bob Dylan. But really it's the quality of the songs and Burke himself, one of the most versatile and charismatic singers around, that make this album so special. The 11 songs range from the lazy, seductive plea of the title track and the gravelly gospel of "Diamond in Your Mind" to the country-soul of "Other Side of the Coin" and the civil-rights-era urgency of "None of Us Are Free." Joe Henry's production is suitably subdued, and the instrumentation--generally guitar, bass, drums, organ, and piano--is sympathetic throughout. And if you doubt that Burke is the real star in a room crowded with those folks, consider this: the two slightest tracks here were written by Wilson and Costello, while one of the best, the album-closing "Sit This One Out," was written by someone named Pick Purnell. A great album not fixed in the past or fully of this decade, Don't Give Up is a crowning achievement of an R&B pioneer who has returned to reclaim his self-bestowed title from the '60s: "The King of Rock and Soul.
