This was the first commemorative coin issued by the United States Mint, created for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
It is struck from 90% silver and 10% copper.
The obverse features a portrait of Christopher Columbus, while the reverse depicts his ship, the Santa Maria, sailing above two planispheres.
These coins are common in circulated grades, but examples in uncirculated condition can hold higher value for collectors
