A beautifully tactile antique Southeast Asian silver betel box, richly decorated with hand-worked repoussé scrollwork and concentric bead borders.
Small containers of this type were traditionally used across Indonesia, Malaysia and southern Thailand to hold betel nut, lime paste and spices used in the long-standing cultural tradition of betel chewing — a practice as socially important in Southeast Asia as snuff-taking once was in Europe.
This example has a particularly pleasing form, with a domed lid rising from a fluted lotus-style border, centred on a raised boss and surrounded by flowing foliate scrolls. The decoration has been worked by hand from the reverse in the traditional repoussé technique, giving the surface a wonderfully soft sculptural quality.
The box is made from regional “village silver”, XRF tested at approximately 65% silver, which is entirely typical for Southeast Asian silver objects of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Such pieces were produced for local use rather than export, and therefore were rarely hallmarked.
The lid lifts cleanly to reveal the original interior with a fine natural patina from age and use.
Compact, decorative and full of character, it makes a lovely display piece — equally at home on a desk, cabinet of curiosities, or among Asian antiques.

Condition
Good antique condition overall.
There is a stress split to the base rim, visible in the photographs, where the sheet silver was originally formed. This is not unusual with lower-grade hand-worked silver and does not affect the integrity of the box. The decoration remains crisp and attractive with a pleasing natural patina.
Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
