The photo is an original print cabinet card photograph from circa 1900. It is of a worker in what is probably a pharmacy that also serves candy, handcrafted sodas, and malts. It was often a community hub. The pharmacist or soda jerk is serving a drink.
This would explain why the jars have some unusual names on them that I cannot fully read or decipher. See the photos for close up images. There are strange spellings on some of the bottles such as “Zingib Jam” and others. Would be interesting to investigate all these further.
There is so much wonderful detail in this photo I’m always finding something new and interesting to look at. From the lady drinking her malt to the glass holders right behind her to the bottles on the shelves and especially the wonderful huge toad on the top shelf.
Oh wait!! Stranger still. Look at the mirror above the man dispensing a drink. I swore it was a model of a man’s head or something however there is no reflection of it right there. Which means it’s an actual man looking behind him, on the other side of the room, reflected in the mirror!
The photo is about 8” wide by 10” tall and the image area is about 4 1/2” by 6 1/2”. There are no markings on the back of the photo. No idea where this was taken unfortunately.
This vintage photograph, likely from the early 20th century, appears to capture a moment from the history of soda and malt shops as well as pharmacies from the era.
It is in very good overall shape with minor wear from age and use over the years. There is some wear along the edges of the photo area, mostly lower right but in other areas also. But the detail of the photo is what counts and that still shows wonderfully. This is a one of a kind photo you will not find again.
