Front Side (Obverse): "Slender Gold" calligraphy

This face contains four characters read in vertical (top-bottom) and then horizontal (right-left) order: 政和通寶 (Zhèng hé tōng bǎo).

  • 政和 (Zhenghe): It is the name of the era of the reign of Emperor Huizong, which spanned from 1111 to 1117 AD

  • 通寶 (Tongbao): It literally means "Circulating currency" or "Universal Treasure". It was the standard terminology to indicate that the piece was legal tender.

  • Calligraphic style: The most notable thing is that they are written in the style Shoujin-ti (Delgado Gold), created personally by the emperor himself. It is characterized by very fine, angular and elegant lines.


Back Side (Reverse): The usual austerity

  • Description: This face is completely Lisa (without inscriptions or symbols).

  • Meaning: During most of the Song Dynasty, the reverse side of the coins was left blank. This served to simplify the casting process and was the standard of the time, unlike other dynasties that included mint marks or the year of issue.
