This is a ruby glass ambrotype. Ambrotypes are positive one-of-a-kind images, on clear glass, and need black backing in order to be seen. Ruby glass ambrotypes are the exception, as they are on colored glass, and don’t need black backing.

The young lad looks like he’s not enamored with the process, not at all. He grips the chair in an unusual manner. 

He’s a handsome tyke in his pinstripe jacket with gold buttons, gold ring, and loose checkered pants.

SIZE. Ninth plate (image is 2 1/2 x 2 inches).

HOUSING. Functional thermoplastic wall frame with a hook on the back for hanging. Relatively good condition.

CONDITION. Lots of little scratches, including on his face.

APPEARANCE. Warm tones. An endearing portrait.
