• As one of only three architects in the colony at the time, Watts was appointed to design several public buildings, often utilizing standard Royal Engineers designs adapted for the climate with wide verandas.
• Key Projects:
  • Military Hospital (1815): Located at Observatory Hill, Sydney, now the S.H. Ervin Gallery.
  • Parramatta Projects: Designed the military hospital, parts of Government House, and the towers of St John's Church.
  • Lancer Barracks: Designed the two-story barracks block and "Bob's Hall".
• Career Shift: After his military service in NSW, he moved to South Australia, serving as the Postmaster General from 1841 to 1861, where he was known as "Captain Watts".
