A striking 18ct gold tie pin depicting Viracocha, the creator and supreme deity in Andean mythology, rendered in a stylised form derived from the famous Staff God imagery of the Tiwanaku civilisation and later adopted into Inca cosmology.

The circular plaque shows the unmistakable central deity face with radiating geometric staffs or rays, an iconic design that appears on the celebrated Gateway of the Sun at Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) in modern Bolivia. In Andean belief, Viracocha was the divine creator who fashioned the sun, moon and stars and brought civilisation to humanity.

This example is a beautifully crisp miniature interpretation of that ancient motif, produced as Peruvian jewellery in the mid-20th century, when local goldsmiths began reinterpreting pre-Columbian designs in fine gold for diplomatic gifts and the international travel market.

The plaque itself is solid 18ct gold, confirmed by XRF testing, and mounted on a traditional tie pin fitting with safety chain and bar.

Small but visually powerful, it combines ancient symbolism, modernist design and intrinsic gold value, making it both a wearable piece of jewellery and a fascinating conversation piece.

💡 Collector’s Note

The Staff God / Viracocha motif originates in the Tiwanaku civilisation of the Andes (c. AD 500–1000) and became one of the most recognisable symbols in Andean art. During the mid-20th century, Peruvian jewellers revived these ancient motifs in fine gold, creating distinctive pieces that blend archaeology, mythology and modern design.
