Antique Crown DERBY Figure of AIR C1915-34, (see photo of painted mark).

This figure representing the Element of AIR, from the Series of the Four Elements, is from the Stevenson&Hancock period of the Derby factory. She is delicately hand-painted, in pleasingly subtle shades, like her companion figures listed separately and shown here in the group photos.

The figure has a graceful and elegant form, very appealing in shape and colour. She is painted with great care and attention to detail - I particularly like the butterflies on her robes, a reference to the very early days of Derby porcelain. This figure has great movement through her body and drapery - running through the air, holding her bird aloft.

Reference book pics show examples of this figure from the 1770s as modelled by Pierre Stefan and in the 1850s.

She is signed with the initials W.H./H.W. which I have not been able to tie to a name as yet.
