Theme: Cyprus, 2026, 5 Euro, Silver Coin – “Ta Castra tis Righenas”

The Cyprus 2026 €5 silver coin “Ta Castra tis Righenas” celebrates one of the most famous legends of Cypriot medieval history. Issued by the Central Bank of Cyprus, the coin pays tribute to the legendary fortresses associated with the mythical Queen Righena, a powerful figure in Cypriot folklore. Struck in fine silver with exceptional detail, the design highlights the dramatic mountain castles that dominate the Pentadaktylos range and symbolize the island’s rich historical and cultural heritage. This beautiful commemorative issue combines history, legend, and numismatic craftsmanship, making it a highly desirable piece for collectors of Cypriot and European commemorative coins.

The Castles of Righena

The “Castles of Righena” refer to three medieval fortresses in the Pentadaktylos mountains of northern Cyprus: St. Hilarion, Buffavento, and Kantara. According to Cypriot legend, these castles were built by Queen Righena (the “Queen”) to control and protect the island from invaders. The castles were positioned strategically across the mountain ridge so that signals could be sent from one fortress to another, allowing defenders to monitor the surrounding coastline and plains. Today, these dramatic hilltop castles are among the most iconic medieval monuments of Cyprus, admired for their spectacular views, impressive defensive architecture, and the enduring legend that connects them.
