ESP Eclipse S-1 Black Electric Guitar Used Product Shipping From Japan
ESP Guitars, with its deep understanding of electric guitar history and proactive incorporation of cutting-edge technology, is supported by many professional musicians for its high cost performance. Not only is it a leading Japanese guitar manufacturer, but it has also earned a high reputation both domestically and internationally as a leading brand in the music industry. Its users include legendary artists such as James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and Toshihiko Takamizawa of THE ALFEE, as well as energetic Japanese artists like 0.1g no Gosan, proving its high practicality.
This time, we introduce the signature model of SUGIZO, guitarist of LUNA SEA and participant in a wide range of projects. It was frequently used during his rise as a guitar hero in the 90s visual kei movement, and is a memorable model alongside the HORIZON and PRINCE models. This model, which could be considered his signature instrument, features an LP shape and a tremolo bridge. Over time, the specifications of this guitar have been updated to match the evolving sound concept of SUGIZO, but this particular instrument is especially memorable for its "Floyd Rose + Lace Sensor 3 single-coil pickup" configuration. It's a truly captivating instrument in terms of sound.
Specifications include a neck-through construction, with a maple neck and body center. The body sides are made of alder, known for its wide range and clear projection—a rare combination for an LP-type guitar. The fingerboard is made of tightly grained black ebony, a style rarely seen these days. It features a medium scale length, 24 frets, black hardware, and a comfortable, standard neck shape. Other features include the original 3:3 headstock shape, heel-less joint, body back contour, and simple controls with a 5-way pickup selector, direct switch, and master volume—all demonstrating a strong focus on playability. Conductive paint is applied to the cavity for excellent noise reduction.
All pickups are direct-mounted Lace Sensors, in a Silver/Silver/Blue combination from front to back. In terms of sound, the low noise and smooth response unique to the Lace Sensor pickups are major attractions. In clean to crunch tones, the sound image is well-defined, and the solid range allows for good separation of arpeggios and chords. When distorted, in addition to the sharp attack characteristic of Floyd Rose-equipped guitars, the clarity derived from the alder body comes to the forefront, making it less likely to get lost in a band mix. The Blue pickup has a nuanced feel of thickness and sustain, making it easy to obtain a singing midrange for lead playing, while the Silver pickup has a well-defined tone that is well-suited for cutting and backing. Because the character clearly changes depending on the pickup position, it can be used in a wide range of situations, from switching between clean and distorted tones to changing the tone within a song.
This guitar was purchased in 1998 by its first owner at the ESP flagship store in Shibuya. Having been used very little after purchase and carefully stored, this guitar shows only minor signs of age such as slight scratches and tarnishing of parts. Otherwise, there is no significant damage, and it remains in remarkably good condition, fully original with some protective film still intact. The neck, crucial for playability, has plenty of truss rod adjustment remaining. While the frets are relatively low from the time of manufacture, they show almost no wear. Accessories include a wrench, tremolo arm, and original gig bag/leather case.
The S-1, a representative model of SUGIZO from the 90s with various specifications, often sells for around 400,000 yen. However, given its surprisingly good condition, this instrument seems more appropriately priced in the 500,000-600,000 yen range. This time, it's offered at an affordable price, making it a rare opportunity to experience the 90s LUNA SEA sound and the specifications from the era when lace pickups were gaining popularity. Whether you've been searching for one or are just curious, don't miss this opportunity!
