Historical context: Karl Marx (1818-1883) was a German philosopher, political columnist, critic of classical economics, theoretician of the labor movement, socialism and communism.
Among his best-known works are the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts from 1844, the Communist Manifesto and the unfinished Capital.
Together with Friedrich Engels, he developed his own materialistic conception of history, based on economic laws. According to them, there is a conflict in society between the governed and the rulers, which will be eliminated by the abolition of private ownership of the means of production and the establishment of a classless, communist society.
His philosophical and political influence was enormous, and a number of directions in the left part of the political spectrum emerged from his ideas, including both the official ideology of socialist states (Marxism-Leninism) and various variations of unorthodox Marxism, such as the Frankfurt School (Wiki).
