Artist's Biography: Arie Wachenhauser (Israeli – polish, 1917-1998) Arie Wachenhauser, painter, was born in Warsaw,
Poland in 1917.
In the 1930s he studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.
In 1938 immigrated to Eretz Israel (then British Mandatory Palestine) and
settled in Tel Aviv.
In Tel Aviv he studied art with Aharon Avni at the Midrasha, Art Teachers
Training College.
In 1962 he joined the Israel Painters and Sculptors Association. He was also a
member of the Artist Quarter Safed.
Wachenhauser’s art was influenced by the Paris School of Art in its use of
expressionist brushstroke technique. Most of his work is portraiture, particularly
portraits of mothers and children. Wachenhauser’s style is most closely associated
with Poetic Realism and the School of Paris (École de Paris) aesthetic. His
work is celebrated for its quiet, melancholic beauty and its focus on the human
condition. Intimate Figuration: Wachenhauser’s primary subject was the human figure, particularly
women and children in moments of quiet contemplation or domestic repose. His
figures often have large, expressive eyes and a slightly elongated,
Modigliani-esque grace. Atmospheric "Sfumato": He utilized a soft, blurred technique that creates a dreamlike,
hazy atmosphere. The edges of his subjects often melt into the background,
suggesting a sense of memory or nostalgia. The Tonal Palette: Wachenhauser favored a restrained and sophisticated palette. He
often worked with "dusty" tones—muted ochres, pale terracottas, and a
wide variety of greys and browns, occasionally punctuated by a single vibrant
color like a red flower or a blue dress. Texture and Glazing: His surfaces are often rich with multiple layers of thin glazes,
