RIC VIII Thessalonica 237
**RARE LATE LARGE
BRONZE**
A rarer variant of a
scarcer type of the Emperor Jovian, who ruled for less than a year; this
reverse type of Victoria Romanorvm was only used on these large issues of
Jovian thus adding to the rarity of the type; RIC VIII 237 appears to be among
the rarities of the type as well with a ● on both ends of the mintmark; a
slightly worn example yet the details of the cuirass on the obverse and of the
standing Jovian on the reverse are quite excellent; it is very difficult to photograph this specimen but it is MUCH better in hand! RIC shows five different entries for this type with the only difference being the style of diadem; it is possible that this specimen is RIC VIII Thessalonica 238 for it is nearly impossible to tell if the bust is rosette alone, or rosette AND laurel, with some issues of 237 listed in 238 and vice versa!
