Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Susannah Maria Poole aged 9 - 1857. Worked in an attractive limited colour palette, this sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Susannah was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with nine rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern with a heart and cushion motif to the right of the fifth and sixth rows. The lower section of the linen contains a central floral motif with a butterfly to each side of its topmost blooms and a bird to the left and right of its lower blooms. Both birds have a bellflower motif and tall floral motif beside them, whilst Susannah Maria's details and the date of 1857 run across the bottom edge.
The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places. with a small area of damage to the top edge. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler has been mounted onto a clean later hessian backing cloth at some point in the 20th century, probably when it was framed as the frame dates to the mid 20th century. The frame is oak and is in good condition with the scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 11 3/4" x 18 1/4" (sight size) and 14 1/2" x 21" including the frame.
