Signed in ink Nicholson lower left, pencil title lower left corner, and with Stafford Gallery, Old Bond Street embossed blind stamp 1905 to bottom right.

Condition: overall excellent condition for a 100+ year old work, good colours, no foxing, just some occasional light storage creasing to the edges as seen.

Sir William Nicholson was a British painter and printmaker. He is also known as an illustrator, author of children’s books, stained glass designer, and theatre set designer.

Between 1902 and 1904 William Nicholson lived in Woodstock; during this period he made several architectural studies of Oxford’s colleges and other University buildings. In 1902, he produced a series of watercolour, chalk, and pen drawings of Oxford which were published in 1905 by the Stafford Gallery as two portfolios of lithographs, with descriptions by Arthur Waugh (father of Evelyn Waugh). These dramatic depictions of Oxford show Nicholson’s interest in the effects of light and shade on the city’s architecture.
