This volume examines the trade in waste products into Asia (both recyclable and hazardous waste, which are separate but closely linked topics), from the perspective of how waste imports are regulated, and how they are disposed of or re-processed. Asia has been a destination for the waste trade for many decades. Growing impacts of pollution caused by recyclable waste processing, as well as impacts from the legal or illegal disposal of hazardous wastes, led to Basel Convention restrictions on the hazardous waste trade into Asia. In recent years the region has seen an increase in imports of recyclable waste, as well as the development of cleaner-technology facilities for handling waste. Those facilities, however, must compete for raw resources with cheaper, dirtier facilities which are more numerous. Issues addressed include the effects of international regulation, transboundary movements of waste, and uneven distribution of raw resources within the Asian waste trade.
