c1850, ANTIQUE 19thC STOURBRIDGE ENGRAVED GLASS ROBBIE BURNS NIGHT WHISKEY GLASS

Description:

A unique and extremely fine antique engraved Victorian Scottish themed whiskey glass with Robbie Burns inscription to the base, likely decorated in Stourbridge, and dating to the 19th Century, circa 1850.

The glass is hand blown, then profusely and beautifully engraved with sprigs of holly and mistletoe, a pair of doves and another exotic bird, and a rural scene with two salmon fishermen alongside a river. Opposite is an oval cartouche containing the engraved initials 'SF' or 'FS' surmounted by a ribbon bow. The base is further engraved with a Robbie Burns quote and traditional toast 'HEALTH TO THEM THAT'S A'WA', encircling a Scottish thistle.

Taken from the well known Robbie Burns poem 'Here's a Health to Them That's A'wa', written around 1792, expressing loyalty for Scottish Jacobite supporters, especially those fighting for Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 rising.

This later 19th Century glass has used the core line of the poem, used as a traditional toast at Burns night suppers to express fondness and remembrance to absent friends.
