By the late 60’s, GM had figured out that dramatically angled back glass and a long hood made their midsize cars look wicked, with an aggressive profile that matched the muscle under the hood. But there was a problem. That long hood was heavy, and in 50-plus years of service, those stock hood hinges have done lots of hoisting all that heavy sheet metal. After long decades of daily use, typically without any lubrication or care, the stock hinges often have worn to the point of excessive pivot point slop, not to mention the binding caused by years of dirt and debris caught in them. This creates a hard to open or close hood that can lead to hood damage. Original hood hinges are tough to find in decent shape and most aftermarket stamped steel hood hinges aren’t much better. So that normally leaves the best option being expensive billet hood hinges. These billet hinges are a great solution but can be quite expensive. Not to mention many owners aren’t looking for the “bling” of polished aluminum but for a solution that retains an OEM look at a more palatable price point. Our Hoodini™ plate steel custom hood hinges provide accurate and repeatable opening and closing operations to keep your hood aligned where you’ve set it.
When designing our steel hood hinges for the ’70-’72 Chevelle and El Camino models, we knew it had to be strong and built to handle thousands of opening and closing cycles without the hood adjustment changing, which can lead to chipped paint, hood damage, or even a hood jammed that won’t open. We also knew we wanted custom hood hinges that had an original appearance with minimal maintenance, which is why we opted for 7ga and 10ga steel plate that is flat black zinc coated. This coating, much like the original coating GM used, provides clean looks with a corrosion resistant finish that can be painted if the installer wishes. Lastly, we wanted to ditch the traditional hood spring, which weakens over time and often can be noisy, with a tried and true hydraulic gas strut assembly like those used on modern vehicles. The hydraulic gas strut assembly ensures the hood rises evenly with minimal effort and allows the hood to be closed without placing a lot of stress on the hood structure.
Sold as a pair, Hoodini™ custom hood hinges ship fully assembled and are available in solid and slotted designs. These hood hinges are currently designed as direct replacements for 70-72 Chevelle and El Camino and will NOT work on 68 or 69 Chevelle/El Camino or 68-72 GTO or Cutless models. There is no assembly or adjustment required. Simply follow the included instructions for hood removal and hinge installation. Then, enjoy the adjustability using the multiple adjustment points of the hinges to easily square your hood gaps, and you’ll be wondering why you waited so long to replace your hood hinges!
