You can send me via eBay mail, an excellent, large, sharp focus digital photograph of the back and front with the frame. Along, with the title, medium and measurements. I might have additional questions and will email you a copy of the provenance of the work (it’s exhibition history, newspaper articles etc). The catalogue raisonne of all his works will eventually be deposited at the Archives of American Art and the Frick Art Research Library.

JON CORBINO

1905 – 1964

 

Jon Corbino was one of the most acclaimed artists of the American art world. New York critics praised his smoldering color and sweeping draftsmanship, characterized his images as running the gamut from the clamorous tempests of Wagner to the frolicking breezes of Mozart.

 

Feature articles about Corbino appeared in Esquire, Time and Life as well as in all the national art magazines. In 1945, at the height of his career, his paintings appeared on the covers of three art magazines. Corbino received the first grant awarded to a visual artist from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1941. The poet Stephen Vincent Benet made the presentation at Carnegie Hall, praising Corbino "because he has brought to American art rare gifts of color and design, and because of the honesty, richness and variety of his work."

 

Born in Vittoria, Sicily, on April 3, 1905, Corbino came to the United States at the age of eight with his parents. He grew up in New York City, where he was awarded an art scholarship to the Ethical Culture School and attended the Arts Students League. He received two Guggenheim Fellowships and was elected a member of the National Academy of Design.

 

As early as 1931 Corbino's work was included in museum exhibitions with artists such as Degas and Matisse. His work was featured in three Venice Biennales and he won his first national award at the Art Institute of Chicago for a painting titled Earthquake.

 

People identified with Corbino's heroic themes, which revealed the anxieties of America during the 1930s. The critic from Art News observed, "Only thirty-three years old, Corbino has already become one of the foremost figures in contemporary painting." These paintings of disasters such as wars and floods were Corbino's tribute to the perseverance of man against the unknown forces of the universe.

 

Corbino was known for his love of horses, sometimes painting these powerful animals as mythic symbols from the Greek legends of his childhood. He painted the fantasy of the circus and the ballet, often from backstage where the performers were captured in a reflective moment.

 

The critic of the Chicago American defined Corbino's impressive career for a retrospective exhibition in 1966. "He painted people of the world-people on the beach, in the sun, in the moonlight. But he graced them with spirit, life, and movement that transcend the everyday."

FINE ART RETURN POLICY Returns are accepted if we are notified by you within 3 days of delivery less all shipping, eBay and PayPal fees and ONLY if our written description or images are not consistent with the actual item.

We spend hours to accurately describe the artwork in detail and take dozens of photographs of each work outside in the sunlight to make sure the color is correct and all flaws are described in the text or the photographs.

The exception to the above concerns artwork under glass that has not been unframed and we can only describe and photograph what we can see and whatever perceived flaws are hidden within the framing do not qualify for a return.

Only one buyer during our 24 years on eBay has requested a return and in his case received one. Buyer’s remorse is not considered a reason for a return nor is multiple extraneous dings, surface or finish losses etc--- that are not individually described or photographed regarding the antique/vintage or new frames on the artwork or sold separately.

We want you to be happy with your purchase so please carefully read all the text, examine the photographs and email me if you have any questions or concerns before you bid. Understand that the authenticity of your purchase is guaranteed indefinitely and once you bid ---you are entering into a legally binding contract to purchase the artwork.

During our 24 years on eBay--not once has a package been damaged or lost. We are expert packers and use USPS registered mail for smaller works. If UPS is used, the work is professionally packed. But stuff happens and if USPS or UPS has damaged the box and the contents-- either you or your representative must mention this to the delivery person, get a damage receipt from them at the moment of delivery (or have them write it on the receipt you sign and their copy) and save all the packing materials so an insurance claim can be pursued if the artwork is damaged.
