2016
First published in 1855.
Butler was a Major in the East India Company's 55th Bengal Native Infantry and served as the Principal Assistant to the Governor-General on the North East Frontier of Assam.
Most of this book recounts the author's military experiences and battles against various Indian tribes. Of sporting interest is a chapter noting the capturing of elephants, with an additional chapter detailing his hunts for buffalo, tiger, and rhinoceros from elephant back in Assam. (Czech, Bibliography of Asian Big Game Hunting Books.)
22 x 14 cm. x + 220 pp. The text is clear but the plates are poorly reproduced.
Very good condition. Bottom corners of the boards bumped but otherwise like new. NB when the book is opened the pages have a slightly “chemical” odour although you soon get used to it.
