»Astral Weeks« is the second solo album by Northern Irish musician Van Morrison, with which the former Them singer continued to develop his solo career after the band broke up.
The eight-song record was recorded in just two days in September and October 1968 at Century Sound Studios in New York. Van Morrison received support from guitarist Jay Berliner, bassist Richard Davis, percussionist Warren Smith and drummer Connie Kay. It is the first album that the singer produced for the Warner Brothers label.
»Astral Weeks« is a mixture of folk, blues and jazz. It is not one of the most successful Van Morrison albums, but it has achieved cult status among his fans to this day.
A new edition of the album will be released in 2015, for which all eight songs have been completely remastered. The expanded version of the record also contains four additional, previously unreleased tracks. These include a long version of "Ballarina", a vibraphone-heavy version of "Madame George", the unabridged version of "Slim Slow Slider" and the first take of "Beside You".
