Willis B. Haviland [1890 1944] was an American fighter pilot who was one of the earliest members of Lafayette Escadrille, an aviation pioneer, and Early Bird who was the first pilot to ever launch his aircraft from a Battleship. Haviland traveled to France in 1915 and joined the American Ambulance Corps and served on the Alsace Front for 17 months. On September 7, 1916, he obtained his pilot's license and was assigned the Lafayette Escadrille's and was the 16th American to join and one of the first American pilots to engage the Germans in the sky. He served in aerial combat and was given the mission of scouting past enemy lines, photographing vital enemy positions and equipment. After the United States entered the war, he joined the American Air Force and served as a pilot instructor. Haviland was credited with two confirmed aerial victories and was awarded the Navy Cross. In 1919, he launched his plane from the deck of the U.S.S Texas, becoming the first pilot to launch from a battleship. During World War II, he served as a naval commander and died suddenly in 1944 while assigned in the Central Pacific. The American pilots who flew in the French Air Force during World War I, the Lafayette Escadrille squadron, it is generally believed that there were approximately 209 pilots who successfully completed French flight training and of these 180 served in combat. Many of the above like Haviland initially served in the Ambulance Corps of the American Field Service before transferring to aviation. Listed for auction is a check [DS] document signed, by Willis B.
