The Kurotamari Cutlery Series features knives spoons and forks crafted by a specialized cutlery manufacturer in Tsubame-Sanjo using a black oxide coloring technique. The cutlery itself is constructed from thick sturdy stainless steel with a matte finish for a textured finish. The overall silhouette is a timeless basic design. These black cutlery pieces feature a black oxide coloring treatment on their surfaces. Unlike painting or plating black oxide coloring is not a coating or covering of the surface of a product rather it is a technique that uses a chemical reaction to thicken the oxide film (passive film) that gives stainless steel its name resulting in a black color due to the refraction of light. By controlling the thickness of this oxide film to a certain thickness stainless steel appears black. This black coloring treatment creates a thicker film than the natural oxide film on the surface of stainless steel making it more resistant to rust. Furthermore because it chemically alters the natural oxide film on the surface of stainless steel the product complies with the Food Sanitation Act. The chemical change in the oxide film is less than 1 μm allowing for processing while preserving the stainless steel's metallic luster and matte texture. The crucial black color is not jet black but rather inky black. And while the thickness is controlled to a consistent level there are subtle variations in color from product to product. This fluctuating pool of ink color is the Sumi-Tame Cutlery Series. The product lineup includes dinner knives dinner forks and dinner spoons for main meals small teaspoons cake forks coffee spoons and pick forks and butter knives and soup spoons. Additionally there are dinner cutlery sets for one and two people that are more cost-effective than the individual items. Todai Co. Ltd. the cutlery manufacturer was founded in 1953 in Tsubame City Niigata Prefecture. Since then it has been involved in the city's major stainless steel cutlery industry and its handcrafted cutlery is often used in high-end hotels and restaurants. It is one of the few companies to consistently manufacture most of its cutlery in-house. *Note* In order to reduce corporate waste the product packaging is simple with only a PP bag inside. Also no instruction manual is included so please check the product description.
