We are pleased to present this rare botanical engraving from Dr. David Nathaniel Friedrich Dietrich (1800-1888). Featuring original hand color ( water color), this botanical comes from "The Flora of Germany, a Magazine for Gardeners, Botanists, and Flower Lovers", published in Jena, Germany between 1833 and 1864.
Dietrich was born in Ziegenhain. In 1828 Dietrich worked as a botanical gardener in Jena. In 1836 he received his doctorate at the University of Jena, and later served as a curator at the botanical garden in Jena.
Dietrich wrote pamphlets on poisonous plants, mosses, and forest flora and fauna of Germany as well as several botanical encyclopedias. His five-volume, 1839-1852 Synopsis Plantarum included about 80,000 species and 524 genera. The five-volume Flora of Germany published from 1833-1864 contains 1150 colored panels. The two-volume Forst Flora and the 476 booklets of the comprehensive Flora Universalis are his most famous work.
As framers and lovers of antique prints, we've long ago come to the realization that some aging on old prints isn't really a bad thing. It marks the print as authentic and if you're comfortable with it you'll have way more opportunities to collect what you want. Add to your collection or start one now. This is Plate VIII,1
