In a room that still carries the air of another century, the dolls gather quietly. That is the premise of this photo collection, and once you open it you find yourself moving through those rooms as if you had been invited in.

Photographer Nagare Tanaka, who has spent years photographing dolls, brings together works by 45 doll artists plus two live models across 96 pages. The range is wide: ball jointed bisque dolls, cloth dolls, and sculptural hitogata figures, each set against aged interiors where the surroundings and the figures play off one another. Rather than isolating each doll on a plain background, Tanaka lets the weathered space become part of the portrait, and the individuality of each maker comes through all the more strongly for it.

For collectors of BJD and art dolls, for makers looking at how other artists resolve a face or a hand, or for anyone drawn to the atmosphere of Japanese doll photography, this book offers a great deal to study and return to. The text is in Japanese, but the work here is carried by the photographs.
