This is a lovely antique Dutch needlework sampler, showing flower wreaths, a biblical scene (the grape carriers Joshua and Caleb), flower vases and fruit baskets.
It was made by an 11 year old girl ('oud 11 jaar') named Lijsbeth van Vliet Oosterhoorn (she stitched her initials on the sampler: 'LVVO'). Lijstbeth was born in Krommenie on January 11 1806. Krommenie is a small pretty old town situated a little north from Amsterdam. She passed away on March 31 1878.
I have another sampler stitched by Lijsbeth for sale in my store.
The sampler is stitched on open weave linen cloth with multi-colored silk thread.
It measures approximately 15 x 11 1/4 inches or 38 x 28.5 cm.
The sampler is in good condition, considering its age. The cloth is a little bit raffled around the edges. If you have any questions or would like more or larger pictures, please don't hesitate to contact me.
