There’s something special about that point in your project vehicle’s progression when you finally set your engine and transmission down on the mounts to be bolted in for the final time. All that mock up work, welding, and “where did I leave the tape measure?” moments are behind you and now you can focus on wiring and plumbing so you can twist that key and hear your creation come to life. No matter the type of vehicle or how much room you have in the engine bay, dropping that engine into place (especially if you have the transmission hanging off the back of it) can be a stressful and potentially unsafe bit of shop work. However, it doesn’t have to be stressful or unsafe if you’re using the correct engine lift equipment.
Obviously, you need an Engine Hoist to raise and lower the engine, transfer it from your Shop Engine Stands over to the vehicle, and so forth. Where the issue for many is just how to attach their engine to the cherry picker. The most basic is an engine sling made from a length of chain mounted from front to back of the engine, usually diagonally across the way from the corner of each cylinder head. It works, but if you don’t place the engine hoist hook in just the right chain link, frustration sets in, and you must start all over. An engine lift plate is a decent plan, but what if you have no intake manifold installed or you’re dropping in a modern EFI engine like an LS, Coyote, or Gen III Hemi? Those plates have nowhere to bolt to. Your best option, and the safest option, is our 1,500 lb. capacity four-point engine leveler on the end of your engine crane.
While the old fashioned length of chain or carb mounting pad plate may have worked in the past, you no doubt struggled with engine placement and probably needed a few friends to help get the engine and transmission into place. We’ve seen more than a few sketchy attempts in our lives (pull the front tires and drop the front end, jack up the rear end to put the vehicle on a better “approach angle,” etc.). With our four-point engine leveler you can easily lift your engine and transmission combo and then adjust the angle on the fly versus the heavy-duty threaded adjuster. This makes dropping the tailshaft of the transmission a one person job. Heck, the whole engine/transmission installation can really be a one person job when you use our four-point leveler!
Constructed from heavy gauge steel, the four-point leveler features a 1,500 lb. work load capacity; more than sufficient for any big block and cast iron transmission from yesteryear you can think of and easily handles modern aluminum headed small blocks and transmissions without breaking a sweat. The four equally spaced lift chains are 15 inches long and have a 12-inch cross spread. The chain brackets feature an L-shaped design with dual 1/2-inch through holes for your mounting fasteners (not included). This allows the installation of your mounting fasteners in a vertical or horizontal position to be attached to the block face, intake bolt locations, cylinder head surface, and more, providing plenty of attachment options. Add one of our four-point engine levelers as your new go to engine lift sling to your shop hoist today and make your engine installation easier, faster, and safer.
