This listing is for 7 unrooted hardwood cuttings (8-10 inches in length). Cuttings will have all leaves removed except the top few leaves, which are used for growth via photosynthesis.

The Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is a vibrant flowering shrub native to tropical Asia. It's prized for its large, showy flowers, which can be single or double and come in a wide range of colors, including red, pink, orange, yellow, and white. This evergreen shrub thrives in warm, sunny climates and is a popular choice for gardens, containers, and even indoor spaces in colder regions.

It’s easy to root cuttings from almost all hibiscus. You can root them in two different methods, either in water or in sand/soil.

Water

Stand the cuttings in a container with about three inches of water. Place the container in a well-lit location like a windowsill, but not in direct sunlight. Change the water twice a week and within a few weeks you will notice fine white roots forming from the submerged stems. When roots are 1-2 inches long, remove from the container and plant the cutting in a small pot filled with well-draining potting soil.

Sand/Soil

We prefer sand because it’s well-draining and easy to find. However, you can also use perlite, vermiculite, peat moss, or a combination of these. Whichever you choose, the medium should be loose and well-draining so that it allows for plenty of oxygen movement for newly forming roots. You can also use a rooting hormone, but it’s not always necessary, especially for hibiscus. Plant the cutting with the cut end buried about 1-2 inches in the pre-moistened medium. Keep the medium moist but not soggy, and never allow it to dry completely. Spray the leaves with water each day. If you live in a dry climate, you can place a plastic bag over the container to maintain humidity. Keep the container in a warm area, open the bag daily to encourage air circulation, and keep the medium moist. It can take a month or so for the cuttings to root, but you will know by it forming new leaves. Repot the new plant when the root system is well established.
