Hi, please look at this rare US Civil War United States Navy soap dish. Made by the Novelty Rubber Company, New Jersey, it is made from Gutta Percha, a vulcanised rubber. Similar materials were used for early golf balls.

These soap dishes were used by soldiers as well as sailors during the US Civil War.

Complete with its mirror, this is a rare survivor from this period in America's turbulent history. It also retains its hook on the mirrored piece, to hang for shaving.
