Early Japanese Woodblock Print Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957)
Rare and lovely work of art. Paper measures about 15 x 10.5 inches, with
the printed area being slightly smaller.
It is signed on the print, with red authenticity stamp, and there is hand writing on the bottom in Japanese. Date is circa 1933. On natural rice paper. Colors are wonderful in captivating hues of the blue of night with stars.
It has some defects. There
is a spot on the upper left that looks like a slight water stain, and on the
back side there is tape residue in each corner. It was stuck to the back
of a Marion Davies movie show card, which we've shown but is not included
with this listing. If you want the show card it is listed here https://www.ebay.com/itm/267307886963.
Also the original frame is included,
it is fragile. No glass included, it is vintage the 1930s. We've carefully
pulled it apart for shipping, and will include it if you want it also.
Please see pics.
The view is of Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto. It looks like dusk or winter
time. Blue dark night is so beautifully captured in this simply stunning
woodblock print. The back is also pretty in its own right.
In the 1980s and 1990s we had a retail store and bought from estate auctions.
I don't remember the particulars of this one, but it got set aside to deal with
later, and well today is later... but with regard to provenance, it would be
from a previous owner in Ventura County, that passed and estate was sold.
Sorry we didn't keep better records.
It is not in pristine condition, but has held up rather nicely considering how it was mounted. The facing front was originally covered by glass, and perhaps that is what has kept it so delightful. Scarce view of temple in Kyoto Japan.
** Please let
us know if you want us to include the original frame? -- If you don't want it we
won't ship it.
Make of it what you will. Thanks for looking, Max Rainet
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Regarded as
a major Japanese landscape artist of the 20th century, Hasui Kawase’s prints are
characterized by their serenity of mood and flawless composition. Born Bunjiro
Kawase in Tokyo, Hasui Kawase was the son of a silk braid merchant. He began his
artistic career studying Japanese-style painting with Kiyokata, as well as
Western-style at the Hakubakai.
His talent was clear, exhibiting in the Tatsumi Exhibition of Painting at age
19. However, soon after seeing Shinsui’s series Eight Views of Lake Biwa, Hasui
turned his attention to woodblock printing in 1919. Shozaburo Watanabe was the
first to recognize his artistic genius and Hasui Kawase soon became the most
popular artist working for this prestigious publisher.
Hasui traveled widely in Japan and his subjects consisted mostly of his
surroundings. These Japanese landscape prints are based upon small, quick
sketches and watercolors taken from nature. Unfortunately, during the earthquake
of 1923, all of his woodblocks and over 200 sketches were destroyed. The works
that predate this event are extremely scarce and in great demand today.
Undaunted, Hasui continued to produce his landscape prints.
In 1956, the Japanese government’s Committee for the Preservation of Intangible
Cultural Heritage designated Hasui's Zojo Temple in Snow and the documentation
of its production as Intangible Cultural Treasures, the greatest artistic honor
in postwar Japan.
All of Hasui Kawase Japanese landscape artwork prints are signed “Hasui” usually
with a variety of red seals reading “sui.” Though Watanabe published the
majority of Hasui Kawase’s prints, Doi, Kawaguchi, Sakai and others published
some designs as well. -- Source: Ronin Gallery
