ANSICHT / FOTOS

VERY LARGE MODEL WITH THREE-CROWNED COAT OF ARMS & ASCENDING LIONS
RICHLY CARVED - WALNUT - AROUND 1780
OBJECT
Richly and finely carved model, baking model, massive and large
Germany, around 1780
walnut
DESCRIPTION
Round and extremely large model, probably a baking model, which is richly decorated with ornaments and floral motifs in the outer rims. In the centre is a large crowned coat of arms with diagonally divided fields, each containing two ascending lions and 3 crowns facing each other, with a small coat of arms in the centre.
Below the coat of arms are two shields with two crossed swords.
Outside the coat of arms are two more lions rising with horns of plenty and swords.
The three-crown coat of arms was mainly used by the Swedish royal family in modified heraldry.
The special feature of the model offered here is its size; the usual models were usually up to a maximum of 25 cm in diameter. In conjunction with the crowned coat of arms and the reference to a royal house, it could therefore have been used as a baking mould for special occasions in large groups.
Engraved with the initials ‘M F’ on the reverse.
DIMENSIONS
Diameter: 38 cm; height rim: 4.5 cm; weight: 3.2 kg.
CONDITION
With the usual signs of use and age. Several wormholes, the lower edge with smaller chips and the left half with a continuous longitudinal crack. With a hook for hanging on the back.
PROVENANCE
Hessian private collection.
