BESCHREIBUNG

Seitliches Portrait als historisierende Darstellung des böhmischen Theologen und Reformators Jan Hus (um 1372-1415). Er gilt als einer der Vorläufer der späteren Reformationsbewegung um Martin Luther.

Nachdem er während des Konzils von Konstanz seine Lehre nicht widerrufen wollte, wurde er als Ketzer auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannt, obwohl ihm der deutsche König Sigismund für das Konzil freies Geleit zugesichert hatte.

Die nach Jan Hus benannte Bewegung der Hussiten geht zum Teil auf sein Wirken zurück. In Tschechien gilt Hus als Nationalheiliger.

DESCRIPTION
Lateral portrait as a historicised depiction of the Bohemian theologian and reformer Jan Hus (c. 1372-1415).
He is considered one of the predecessors of the later Reformation movement centred around Martin Luther. After he refused to recant his teachings during the Council of Constance, he was burned at the stake as a heretic, although the German King Sigismund had promised him free passage to the Council.
The Hussite movement named after Jan Hus can be traced back in part to his work. Hus is considered a national saint in the Czech Republic.
