PROPAGATION

Note: Standard potting mixes are not the best choice for optimum seed growing.

Potting mixes consist of composted bark with some minor additives. Potting mixes

are often contaminated with bacteria and fungi, have variable pH and are

unreliable in terms of drainage and water retention. Not a good start for seeds.

Tip: All seeds, are best sown in a sterile potting media. Native species especially, prefer

smoked germination media which breaks seed dormancy and doubles as

 a natural fungicide.

We have sterile potting media for sale in our store. (Sold separately)

Vermiculite mixes are a great sterile potting media additive and may be improved to

other sterile products such as charcoal, shell grit, pumice, perlite.

We have all types of specialised sterile mixed and single type potting media in our store

and recommend you select the correct type and use our products to achieve the best

 results.

Pre-treatment of seed encourages much better germination. Many native species regenerate well after post bushfire conditions, so smoke treated vermiculite as a potting media is highly recommended.

Chemicals in the ash break seed dormancy and acts as a natural fungicide.

Seed are best sown in very shallow trays to avoid overwatering and planted shallow to the depth of the seed. Seeds need to be kept moist at all times and protected from heat/heavy rain in a stable environment.

Seed growing is an advanced form of gardening and requires a lot of preparation, observation and monitoring on a daily basis and you need to take into consideration every small detail from the size of the pot/tray used to the potting medium, which should be really be sterile, down to how deep the seeds are planted and where the seeds are to be kept during germination and how often they are looked after.

To grow seeds properly you need to put in the effort. Read and research prior to planting. The seed is not going to go anywhere. Don't rush and plan properly. Keep a diary too. Make a note of the date planted, weather conditions, everything you can which can be helpful to diagnose germination issues.
