The Ocean Waves THE VISUAL COLLECTION Art Book Anime Illustration Studio Ghibli

F/S   W/Tracking

The definitive edition of Studio Ghibli's “Another Masterpiece,” “The Sea Can Be Heard,” which has been deeply loved over time, is finally published!

The Sea is Hearing” (original story by Saeko Himuro) is a feature-length animated film produced by Studio Ghibli for a TV special in 1993.

Set in Kochi and Tokyo, the film depicts the irreplaceable lives of the main characters, Rikako Muto, Taku Morisaki, and other high school students, under the name “Studio Ghibli Young Production Group. The film was created under the name of “The Group of Handicraft Productions.

The film, which has been passed down from generation to generation as a legend since its first broadcast on Nippon Television Network Corporation on May 5, 1993, has recently been “rediscovered” by younger audiences, and its theatrical re-release in March 2024 at Bunkamura Le Cinema Shibuya Miyashita in Shibuya, Tokyo, was a long-run hit with packed houses every day. It became a symbol of the “revival” phenomenon in 2024.

This book, published 31 years later, is a lavishly illustrated collection of Mochizuki's best 30 cuts, selected by Mochizuki himself. In addition to the film story with the best 30 cuts selected by director Mochizuki himself, various color illustrations in beautiful quality, character settings, art boards, etc., 140 beautiful illustrations by Katsuya Kondo, drawn when the original story was serialized in the monthly magazine “Animage,” are included for the first time in full color, including some that have never been used. All 140 beautiful illustrations by Katsuya Kondo, including unused ones, are included in color for the first time.

Also included for the first time are character sketches and other valuable materials drawn before the serialization from Kondo's own sketchbooks.

A gallery at the end of the book includes posters, promotional materials, and merchandise from the period, as well as interviews with Director Mochizuki, Animation Director Kondo, and Producer Nozomu Takahashi, both from the time of production and for this publication.

This is a gorgeous visual book that conveys the full appeal of Ghibli's fantastic masterpiece “Umi ga Kikoeru” to Generation Z, who found new value in this work, as well as to real-time fans of the 1993 film.

(A special screening of the film is scheduled for this fall at Bunkamura Le Cinema Shibuya Miyashita to commemorate the publication of this book.)
