DESCRIPTION: This coin commemorates General George Washington’s bold strategy to reclaim Boston by fortifying Dorchester Heights. On the night of March 4, 1776, colonial forces moved 59 cannons—transported from Fort Ticonderoga—up the heights, cleverly using straw to muffle the sound of the wheels. When the British awoke the next morning, they were stunned by the Americans’ overnight achievement and quickly evacuated the city. Struck with a Prooflike finish and securely encapsulated, this half dollar is issued as legal tender for Niue. The reverse depicts Washington overlooking Boston while standing beside one of the cannons his troops had hauled from Fort Ticonderoga, and the common obverse features an American bald eagle alongside the official seal of the island of Niue.
