Großer Becherpokal mit den Allegorien der Erdteile

wohl Schlesien, um 1750

Farbloses Glas mit Schliff und Mattschnitt.

Prachtvoller, großer, leicht zylindrischer Becherpokal. Boden mit Abriss. 

Wandung mit umlaufend geschliffenem Dekor mit den personifizierten Allegorien der vier Erdteile „Africa“, „America“, „Assia“ und „Evoropa“. Europa ist als Königin mit Zepter und Füllhorn mit Blumen sowie Pferd im Hintergrund dargestellt, Asien als Edeldame mit Palmwedel und dampfenden Teekessel mit Fabeltier im Hintergrund, Afrika als Krieger mit Federschmuck, Bogen und Hellebarde sowie Amerika als Edeldame mit Federschmuck und Pfeil und Bogen und Elefant im Hintergrund. 

Offensichtlich hat der für die Dekorierung verantwortliche Künstler die Beschriftungen von Amerika und Afrika vertauscht, denn Elefanten verorten wir eher nach Afrika, indianische Krieger hingegen nach Amerika.       

Höhe:  13 cm; Durchmesser Lippe: 10,5; Durchmesser Fuß: 7,3 cm; Gewicht: 275 g.

ZUSTAND

Sehr gute Erhaltung. Keine Chips oder Beschädigungen. Mit den für handgemachten Glas dieser Zeit üblichen Lufteinschlüssen. Untere Bodenplatte im Rand berieben und beschabt.

Large cup goblet with the allegories of the continents

probably Silesia, around 1750

Colorless glass with cut and frosted edge.

Magnificent, large, slightly cylindrical goblet. Bottom with chipping. 

The wall is decorated all around with the personified allegories of the four continents “Africa”, “America”, “Assia” and “Evoropa”. Europe is depicted as a queen with a sceptre and cornucopia with flowers and a horse in the background, Asia as a noblewoman with a palm frond and steaming teakettle with a mythical creature in the background, Africa as a warrior with a feather ornament, bow and halberd and America as a noblewoman with a feather ornament and bow and arrow and elephant in the background. 

The artist responsible for the decoration has obviously mixed up the inscriptions for America and Africa, as we tend to place elephants in Africa and Indian warriors in America.       

Height: 13 cm; Diameter lip: 10.5 cm; Diameter base: 7.3 cm; Weight: 275 g.

CONDITION

Very good condition. No chips or damage. With the usual air inclusions for handmade glass of this period. Lower base plate rubbed and scraped in the rim.
