The Siberian Tiger is Charles Frace's tenth and final plate in his tribute to this world's great feline predators collection of limited-edition plates. The concluding masterpiece in this ambitious plate series, the "Siberian Tiger" recalls the detail, color and remarkable accuracy of the original Frace' painting that inspired it. The Siberian tiger is the largest of the eight tiger subspecies, outweighing the Bengal by some 200 pounds. All tigers are recognizable as the only great cat with a striped coat. This magnificent coat is orange, gold, or brassy yellow on top marked by its signature black stripes and cream colored to snowy white on its underside.
The various tiger subspecies inhabit parts of India, Indonesia, Java, Burma, Indo-China and parts of the Soviet Union. The adaptable Siberian or Amur tiger inhabits the deciduous and evergreen forests of the Amur Valley in the Soviet Far East, coping with the rigors of snow and rocky terrain. It's favored prey are red deer, wild pigs and antelope. The amount of meat a Siberian tiger can eat in a single night is estimated at sixty to eighty pounds depending on the recency of its last kill.
About the artist, Charles Frace', champion of wildlife, was born in
a small mining town in eastern Pennsylvania called East Mauch Chunk
(Indian for Bear Mountain). He found a special home in the wooded
foothills nearby and discovered the wonders of the outdoors in full
bloom. At the age of five, with his sketchbook as his friend, he
recorded nature's surprises. After graduating with honors from the
Philadelphia College of Art, Mr. Frace' started a career as a freelance
illustrator in New York. But, in the early 1960s, a photo assignment in Florida, at the bird and wildlife sanctuary of the late John Hamlet,
changed his life. His passion for wildlife was renewed; he painted as
one who shares a spiritual bond with animals. Within ten years, he gave
up his work as an illustrator permanently, devoting all of his time to
fine art.
