1983-84 Hockey Dollars Card Set Edmonton Oilers
This lot consists of the Oilers team set of seven cards, each card with a die-cut hole where the hockey dollar coin was to be displayed, stuck on with packing tape. This is a mint set of the seven player cards only, no coins. In fact, only four coins were initially issued, as the promotion failed to garner enough sales to pay for the delivery of the last three coins from the Royal Canadian Mint, the manufacturer of the dollars. The coins were designated as municipal trade dollars, good for $1 in participating businesses in the local businesses, but they were never distributed as coins alone, but rather taped onto the display cards and sold at participating stores for $1.50. There were four players issued as coins, Wayne Gretzky, Andy Moog, Dave Hunter, and Mark Messier. Also a few of the Dave Semenko coins were purchased by the Board of Trade, but issued with plastic caps instead of packing tape. Included in the card set as well as the four issued players, are the three unissued players cards, Lee Fogolin, Ken Linseman, and Dave Semenko. They measure approx. 3" x 9" and are mint with no trace of the packing tape. (We sell the coins in separate lots in our store.) This lot is for the specialist that must have all the cards, it's a bit odd-ball, but the stuff of a great team collection.
