Watercolor artist Mikita Harusaki has built an audience of over 110,000 subscribers, many of them outside Japan, by showing that a finished landscape doesn't need days of labor. This book distills his approach into just five techniques — spray work, gradation, pouring, wet-in-wet, and negative painting — and shows you how to combine them into complete paintings in a single day.
Part 1 starts you off with hour-long projects: clouds, a sunset, a river, rocks, cherry blossoms, each one teaching a single technique through a small finished piece. Part 2 moves to full-day subjects — a misty lake, open grassland under blue sky, a stand of trees, sunrise over moored boats, a waterfall, breaking waves, a snow-covered shrine, and backlit light. Harusaki keeps the barrier low throughout: seven basic tube colors, no stretching or taping of paper, simple underdrawing, no specialist or expensive equipment, and paint applied from the top of the sheet downward so the order always makes sense.
What runs through the whole book is his conviction that watercolor rewards accident. Whether a wash lands where you wanted it or not, that moment of chance is part of the picture — a useful thing to hear if you've been stuck trying to match a model exactly.
