Mari Nakagawa makes dolls of the girls who live inside stories. Not illustrations of them, but three-dimensional figures that carry the atmosphere of the text they came from. This volume of Yaso gathers those dolls and photographs them alongside the literature that gave them shape.
You'll find girls drawn from Mandiargues' "The Lily of the Sea" and "Blood of the Lamb," García Márquez's "Eréndira," Anna Kavan's "Ice," Kafka's "A Country Doctor," Daijiro Morohoshi's "Snow White," Kyusaku Yumeno's "The Miracle of the Pressed Picture," and works by Hiroko Minagawa and Yuko Yamao. The doll photography is by Nakagawa herself, and the book traces the exchange running in both directions — from literature into dolls with Minagawa, and from dolls back into literature with Yamao.
Alongside the plates, the book carries new fiction and essays by Hiroko Minagawa, Akihito Morishima, and Yuko Yamao, plus writing from Yukito Ayatsuji, Yuichi Konno, Masao Higashi, and others. 128 pages.
