(1811–1896) Group of Four Autograph Letters Four autograph letters from the French composer best known for his operas Mignon and Hamlet and as Director of the Conservatoire de Paris from 1871 until his death, to a Mademoiselle Vignon. Each with original envelope. Some light wear and soiling and folding creases, but overall very good. 5 x 8 inches (12.5 x 20.3 cm).November 19, 1878; 2 pp. Thomas writes that he has had "a single instant of free time" since classes began at the Conservatoire, and apologizes for not being able to find time to visit Vignon.October 4, 1879; 3 pp. Thomas writes that he has been busy with "a series of exams at the Conservatoire, then the assize court where I have been called to be a juror for several days," and then taken ill with bronchitis, but that he hopes to see Vignon soon.May 2, 1882; 2 pp. Thomas thanks Vignon for her letter and writes that he will leave the following day for a week in the south of France, but that he hopes to see her upon his return.August 8, 1890; 2 pp. Thomas apologizes that he has been unable to see Mademoiselle Vignon due to illness, and that he "must leave tomorrow, on doctor's orders," so that he will not be able to meet her until after his return at the end of September.
