This is an original press photo. Volcanoes - Gen (Costa Rica - Irazu Volcano). Tons of ash explode into the sky from Irazu volcano in Costa Rica, to be carried by prevailing winds over the capital city of San Jose and the nation's once verdant Central Valley. The intense continuous eruptions which started 10 months ago make life miserable in the city and could ruin the country economically by destroying much of its top-quality coffee crop. This is one of a series of pictures on the volcano and its effects by photographer John Malmin of the Los Angeles Times. Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches. Photo is dated 1-20-1964.
