Between the BBQ, the patio furniture and family get-togethers, decks have to handle more traffic than any other wood around your house. That’s why Sansin Dec is designed as a rugged two-coat formula that penetrates deeply, protecting your wood from within. Where many deck coatings easily peel and scratch, exposing wood to the elements, Dec enhances wood tissue with lasting protection from rain and UV exposure. Perfect for cedar, exotic hardwoods, Southern pine, pressure-treated timber – whatever your deck is made of, Sansin Dec’s deep penetrating solids will protect its beauty and character.

During summer, you want to be able to relax and enjoy the outdoors. For your peace of mind, Dec protects without using harsh or flammable solvents. Like all Sansin Enviro Stains, it is environmentally friendly; and by allowing wood to “breathe“ naturally, helps maintain a healthy moisture equilibrium that inhibits decay.

Dec is formulated with higher solids and stronger pigmentation to look better and last longer. But since even the toughest decks need to be maintained, Sansin Dec makes it easy to keep your deck looking beautiful with just a simple cleaning and maintenance coat.

Coverage

A 3.78-litre tin will cover between 18.5 and 27.5 square meters per coat, depending on the wood's porosity.  Two coats are recommended and the first coat will usually absorb more than the second.

Drying Time

6 – 8 hours between coats. Longer in low temperatures or high humidity.

Surface Preparation

New wood surfaces

Sand the surface well using 60-80 grit paper and a variable-speed orbital sander. This essential process opens the surface of the wood to allow Dec to penetrate, resulting in a consistent finish and rich colour.

Follow by pressure washing or vacuuming for proper cleaning. The surface must be clean and free from dust, dirt, grease, wax, or any existing coatings.

Weathered wood surfaces

All surfaces must first be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime and mildew. If any mildew is present, treat it with a solution of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. Scrub the solution on to the surface and allow to stand for 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly.

Clean weathered wood with Owatrol Net-Trol to remove the loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contaminants.

Sand the surface after cleaning using 60-80 grit paper.  Follow by pressure washing or vacuuming for proper cleaning. After cleaning, allow the wood to dry for 2-3 days before finishing.

Previously coated surfaces

Any existing coatings must be completely removed before applying Dec.   Use a stripper such as Sansin’s Wood-Strip or Owatrol’s Dilunett and. Sand the surface after cleaning using 60-80 grit paper.  Follow by pressure washing or vacuuming for proper cleaning. After cleaning, allow the wood to dry for 2-3 days before finishing.

Application of Dec

Working procedure

·        Stir the product well before and during application. Ensure that any solids settled at the bottom of the can are thoroughly mixed in.

·        Test on an inconspicuous wood surface to ensure proper colour and penetration.

·        The ideal temperature to apply Dec is 21°C (70°F) and relative humidity of approximately 50%.

·        Do not apply if expecting rain or near-freezing temperatures.

·        Do not apply on wood that is warm to the touch.

·        Do not apply in direct sunlight.

·        Apply the first coat of Dec to the point of refusal. The process is to saturate the surface with a heavy coat and allow the product to soak in until the wood will no longer accept it.

·        Brush out any runs or excess pooling on the surface and apply evenly.

·        Continually check the surface to ensure product is absorbing evenly.

Application Methods

Always flood the surface to the point of saturation

        Dipping

        Brushing

        Flood coating

Spraying – hand or automated spraying (low pressure or airless)

Maintenance

Decks & other horizontal surfaces

Horizontal surfaces require maintenance every 1-4 years. Maintenance is necessary when the surface shows signs of wear, such as fading or erosion. Maintaining your wood on a regular basis will ensure long-lasting colour retention, exceptional dimensional stabilization and effective water repellency. Periodically, clean the wood surface with a pressure washer or Owatrol Net-trol to remove dirt and residue. How frequently maintenance coats are required will depend on the quality of prior preparation, quality of application and exposure levels. If fading or erosion is evident, prepare wood by using a power washer to lightly clean the wood surface; or use Owatrol Net-trol. Then re-apply one maintenance coat of Sansin Dec according to instructions. Exposure, workmanship and colour will affect the performance of the coating.

Clean Up

Clean all tools and equipment with soap and water.

Things to Remember

·        Before starting, test the colour choice on a small area. Allow to dry to determine final colour. (remember that this colour will lighten over a couple of months to the final colour).

·        Cover everything you do not wish to coat, including plants and shrubs.

·        Apply between 10°C and 35°C.

·        Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected within 24-48 hours.

·        Mix product thoroughly before and during application.

·        Do not thin.

·        Always work the entire length of a deck board or horizontal siding to a logical break, such as a window or door frame.

·        Never stop the application in the middle of the wall.

·        After spray application, always back-brush or back-roll to improve penetration and uniformity of coverage
