This is a rare/vintage, beautifully handmade folding chess set made in Japan. It was presumably made sometime in the 1960’s/1970’s (or earlier) and it features engraved tiles made up of various scenes/wildlife that make up the board itself which was then inlaid into the wood base. The wood extending out from the board has a dragon carved into each of the four corners and there are two folding hinges made of metal securing the two halves that also allow the board to be folded when not in use. The top and bottom of the opened set also have metal accents that are engraved with a floral pattern with a handle attached to each that come together when the board is folded allowing it to be easily carried. Directly underneath each of the handles are slide-out drawers (that are also carved) that are the length of the entire board which house all the detailed, hand-carved pieces that are held in place with an elastic band/string. Every piece has a decent weight to them but the exact material used is unknown and each piece has green felt attached to the bottoms of their bases. Everything as a whole is in very good condition for its age but there are some minor issues that are all pictured. There are a couple of small scuff marks in the wood on the outer part of the set (when folded) which can easily be covered/masked and one of the halves has a crack along one of the bottom corners which could also be filled/fixed if wanted but, not necessary. Every piece is in great condition as well with no breaks, chips, or damage but some of the green felt on a few of the pieces is coming off but can be glued back onto the piece.
