Sir Vivian Fuchs, leader of the Expedition, affirms in the book the
accuracy of the colour rendering in the photographs taken in
Antarctica, from which the six examples reproduced here have been
selected. They were taken in sub-zero temperatures on Kodachrome (Kodak
Limited), using Leica cameras, and Wratten U.V., L.A. filter. The first
(page 1 of this inset) of the Sno-cat ‘Rock ’n’ Roll’ encountering the
first crevasse is by Mr George Lowe, O.B.E., chief photographer with
the Expedition. A New Zealander, he was with the successful Everest
Expedition, and established the last depot for Sir Edmund Hillary. The
other five photographs were taken by Dr Jon Stephenson, an Australian
geologist with the Expedition; they are (from top to bottom of each
page, in page order): the Magga Dan unloading at Shackleton; Mt Erebus
(13,280 ft) from near Scott Base with Castle Rock in the middle
distance; wireless operator Taffy Williams with the dog team in the
Shackleton Range; late evening in the Whichaways; and vehicles passing
the western end of the Shackleton Range towards Recovery Glacier. Caption material by Miss Susan Fuller, photo librarian.
