Formation: The 128th TFS was originally constituted as the 128th Fighter Squadron (Interceptor) on November 12, 1940, and activated on January 15, 1941, at Morris Field, North Carolina. It was initially equipped with the P-39 Airacobra.
World War II: During World War II, the 128th Fighter Squadron served in the Pacific Theater, flying combat missions in the South Pacific. It was credited with destroying numerous enemy aircraft and earning several unit citations for its actions.
Korean War: The 128th Fighter Squadron was activated for the Korean War and deployed to Japan, where it flew combat missions in support of UN forces. It earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions during this conflict.
Vietnam War: During the Vietnam War, the 128th Tactical Fighter Squadron was deployed to Southeast Asia, where it flew combat missions in support of ground forces. It was equipped with the F-4 Phantom II and was involved in various operations, including Operation Rolling Thunder and Operation Linebacker.
Post-Vietnam Era: After the Vietnam War, the 128th TFS continued to serve as part of the Air National Guard. It was re-equipped with the F-16 Fighting Falcon in the 1980s and continued to serve in a tactical fighter role.
Inactivation: The 128th Tactical Fighter Squadron was inactivated on December 31, 1991, as part of the overall drawdown of U.S. military forces following the end of the Cold War.
