If you have ever tried to tell one bamboo from another in the field, this reference gives you a working system for it. Around 240 species are covered here, centred on the bamboos and sasa that grow wild in Japan, with widely encountered tropical species from overseas added alongside them.
The species are organised into four groups — temperate running bamboos, temperate sasa, tropical clumping bamboos, and tropical bamboos from outside Japan — and each entry sets out the genus, scientific name, Japanese name with its kanji and regional variants, distribution, distinguishing characteristics, and traditional and modern uses. Read across the entries and you begin to see how habit, culm form, and sheath tell you what you are looking at.
A closing section gathers the background knowledge you need before heading out: classification, the botanists behind the scientific names, ecology and physiology, bamboo shoots and culm sheaths, growing sites, cultivation and management, pests and diseases, historical and contemporary uses, the names of the plant's parts, and a simplified identification key. The text is in Japanese, with illustrations throughout the species entries.
